The runway clears. Cherry blossoms scatter across the tarmac. The Horizon Festival has come to Japan.
You are a tourist. That is how every Horizon story begins — a nobody with a festival wristband and a dream of being the fastest driver on the planet. But this time, the festival is different. This time, the roads are different. This time, you are driving through Japan.
Forza Horizon 6 drops you into the most ambitious open-world map Playground Games has ever built. Tokyo alone is five times larger than the biggest urban area in any previous Horizon game. Shibuya Crossing rendered in asphalt-melting detail. Ginkgo Avenue lined with golden autumn trees. The docklands at midnight, neon reflected in rain-slicked roads. And that is just the city. Beyond Tokyo, the map stretches across seven distinct regions — suburban sprawl, coastal highways, mountain passes through the Japanese Alps, bamboo forests, rice paddies shimmering in the sun, and a full ski resort blanketed in powder snow.
There is no conventional story in the narrative sense. Forza Horizon games are about progression: start as an unknown, race your way through festival events, earn accolades, unlock new cars and areas, and climb toward the Horizon Hall of Fame. The story is the road. The story is the next corner. The story is the car you have been saving for, finally sitting in your garage, waiting for you to unleash it on a mountain pass at sunset.
Playground Games has threaded Japanese automotive culture through every corner of the experience. JDM legends — the Nissan Skyline GT-R, the Toyota AE86, the Mazda RX-7, the Honda NSX — are not just cars in a list. They are cultural artefacts, and the game treats them with reverence. Drift zones through Tokyo streets. Touge runs on mountain switchbacks. Midnight club-style races through the city after dark. The Japan setting is not just geography. It is identity.
670 drivable roads. 74 districts. Over 550 meticulously detailed real-world cars. And a dynamic season system that transforms the world from cherry blossom spring to scorching summer to golden autumn to snow-capped winter. This is the Horizon Festival at its most ambitious. This is the one fans have been asking for since the series began.
Forza Horizon 6 does not reinvent the wheel. It perfects it. And then it lets you drift it sideways through Shibuya Crossing at 200 mph.
Open World Racing
The core loop is unchanged and unbeatable: drive anywhere, race anything, discover everything. The map is an interconnected playground of roads, dirt tracks, highways, and hidden paths. Events are scattered across the world — road races, cross-country sprints, street races, drift zones, speed traps, danger signs, and seasonal championships. Fast travel exists but you will rarely use it, because driving from A to B is the entire point.
Car Mastery & Customisation
550+ cars spanning hypercar exotics, JDM legends, off-road trucks, classic muscle, and everything between. Each car can be tuned (suspension, gearing, tyres, aero, engine swaps) and visually customised (livery editor, body kits, wheels). The tuning depth rivals dedicated sim racers while remaining accessible to arcade players. The new Spec Races mode locks everyone to identical cars and tunes, creating pure skill-based competition.
Seasonal World Changes
The world transforms across four seasons on a weekly cycle. Spring brings cherry blossoms and mild weather. Summer opens beach events and festival stages. Autumn paints the forests in gold and red. Winter covers the mountains in snow, transforming road surfaces and opening frozen lake events. Each season unlocks exclusive races, cars, and challenges.
Multiplayer & Social
Horizon Open is the always-online shared world where you see other players driving in real time. Horizon Tour is guided co-op racing through curated routes. Eliminator is a battle royale mode on wheels. EventLab lets players create custom races, courses, and game modes. Cross-play between Xbox and PC is supported at launch. The community features are the most robust in the genre.
Seven regions, 74 districts, 670+ drivable roads. Tokyo is five times larger than any previous Horizon city. The map spans urban neon to alpine snow, coastal highways to bamboo forests. It is the most geographically diverse and culturally authentic open world in racing game history, built with deep respect for Japanese automotive culture.
New for Horizon 6, Spec Races lock all players to identical cars and tunes, removing car advantage and focusing entirely on driving skill. The mode answers a long-standing community request and adds a competitive layer that rewards racecraft over garage depth.
Weekly seasonal rotation transforms the map — cherry blossom spring, scorching summer, golden autumn, snowy winter. Each season alters road surfaces, unlocks exclusive events, and changes the visual identity of the entire world. Seasonal Playlists provide weekly challenges with exclusive car rewards.
The upgraded ForzaTech engine delivers ray-traced reflections, volumetric clouds, photorealistic car models, and dynamic time-of-day lighting that makes every screenshot look like a car advertisement. Japan’s neon-soaked nights and sun-dappled mountain passes are rendered with obsessive detail.
Create custom races, obstacle courses, drift tracks, and entirely new game modes using the EventLab creation tools. Share creations with the community and play user-made content that extends the game indefinitely. The tool set is powerful enough to create entirely new experiences within the engine.
