The ground cracked. Something came through. And everything you knew about the world ended in six hours.
Gears of War: E-Day is the origin story the franchise has been building toward for twenty years. Set 14 years before the first Gears of War, it takes you to Emergence Day itself — the moment the Locust Horde erupted from beneath the surface of Sera and tore civilisation apart in a single, catastrophic assault.
Marcus Fenix is not the grizzled war veteran you remember. He is younger, less armoured, and unprepared for what is about to happen. He is a soldier, yes — a veteran of the Pendulum Wars, the human-on-human conflict that defined Sera before the Locust arrived — but nothing in that war prepared anyone for this. The ground opening beneath your feet. Creatures pouring out by the millions. Cities falling in hours.
Dominic Santiago is at his side. Dom — younger, sharper, not yet carrying the grief that defined him in the original trilogy — meets Marcus on E-Day itself, and their bond forges in the chaos of that first night. The Coalition has called their relationship the emotional core of the game, and everything shown in the E-Day Direct suggests they mean it.
The entire game takes place in a single city: Kalona, the capital of Tyrus. This is not a globe-trotting adventure. It is a survival story set in one location as it collapses around you. Streets you walked through in the opening hours will be rubble by the end. Buildings you cleared will be Locust strongholds when you return. The city is alive, and then it dies, and you are trapped inside its death.
The Locust are terrifying again. The Coalition has leaned into horror — the E-Day Direct showed Wretches crawling through vents, Berserkers charging through walls, and Corpsers dragging soldiers underground. These are not bullet sponges. They are nightmares. And Unreal Engine 5 renders every claw, every mandible, every spray of blood with photorealistic brutality.
This is also the story of how the Lancer got its chainsaw. Tai Kaliso — the spiritual warrior from Gears 2 — appears in the game, and his arc explains how the COG’s standard-issue assault rifle was retrofitted with the iconic bayonet that defines the franchise. It is the kind of lore detail that rewards longtime fans without alienating newcomers.
By the end of E-Day, Sera will be a different world. And Marcus Fenix will be a different man.
Cover. Shoot. Chainsaw. The holy trinity of Gears is back — and Unreal Engine 5 makes it feel like the first time.
Core Combat — Refined, Not Reinvented
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter. The fundamentals are intact: snap to cover, blind fire, pop out for aimed shots, roadie run between positions, and chainsaw anything that gets too close. But The Coalition has refined every mechanic with UE5 precision. Weapons feel heavier. Impacts are more visceral. The Lancer’s chainsaw bites into flesh with haptic feedback that you feel through the controller. Active Reload returns, rewarding perfectly timed reloads with damage bonuses.
Horror-Inflected Design
E-Day leans into horror more than any Gears game since the original. The Locust emerge from underground without warning. Wretches swarm from vents. Berserkers charge through walls you thought were solid. The lighting system creates genuine dread — dark corridors, flickering emergency lights, and the distant sound of something burrowing toward you. This is survival horror wrapped in a shooter’s body.
Co-op — 4-Player Online, 2-Player Split-Screen
The full campaign supports 4-player online co-op and 2-player local split-screen. Co-op has always been Gears’ secret weapon, and E-Day doubles down: four players navigating a collapsing city together, reviving each other under fire, and coordinating flanks in arenas designed for team play.
Versus Multiplayer — 4v4
Competitive 4v4 multiplayer returns with the gnasher-and-lancer combat loop that defines Gears PvP. Built for 120fps on Xbox Series X. Expect classic modes (Execution, Warzone, King of the Hill) alongside new additions.
Horde Siege — 12 Players
A new take on the iconic Horde mode. 12 players defend against waves of Locust in large-scale encounters. Details are limited, but the E-Day Direct confirmed this is a flagship mode designed for endgame replay ability.
The definitive third-person cover shooter returns in UE5 with photorealistic destruction, volumetric lighting, and haptic feedback that makes every chainsaw kill visceral. Cover mechanics are tighter than ever. Active Reload rewards precision. The core loop — cover, shoot, advance, chainsaw- is unchanged because it was already perfect.
The Locust emerge without warning from beneath the ground, through walls, and from vents. Wretches, Berserkers, and Corpsers create genuine dread. The lighting and sound design transform Gears from an action game into a horror experience — the Coalition’s most atmospheric work.
The entire campaign supports 4 players online and 2-player local split-screen. Co-op is not an afterthought — encounter arenas are designed for coordinated team play, with flanking routes, revive mechanics, and difficulty scaling for party size.
A new large-scale defensive mode for 12 players. Defend against escalating waves of Locust in environments that degrade and collapse as the battle progresses. Designed as E-Day’s endgame replayability anchor.
E-Day tells the story of how the COG’s standard-issue rifle got its chainsaw bayonet. The narrative integration of the franchise’s most iconic weapon into the gameplay and story is a love letter to fans — and a powerful example of how E-Day bridges prequel storytelling with gameplay identity.
