There is no campaign. There is no story mode. There is only the Zone, and you are not welcome in it.
Marathon takes place 30,000 years after the events of the original 1994 trilogy. The colony ship Marathon arrived at Tau Ceti IV carrying the last remnants of humanity. Something went wrong. The ship went silent. When contact was re-established, the world below was hostile, alien, and filled with technology and resources that factions across the system will kill to control.
You are a Runner — a consciousness uploaded into a cybernetic shell, deployed to the surface of Tau Ceti IV to extract valuable remnants. You are not the only Runner down there. Other players are hunting the same loot. AI-controlled enemies patrol the zones. And extraction is never guaranteed.
The lore is delivered environmentally and through seasonal narrative updates rather than a traditional campaign. Bungie has committed to building out the Marathon universe over time, with the darker tone and narrative elements added after alpha feedback. The world is mysterious, hostile, and deliberately opaque — the kind of storytelling that rewards community lore-hunters and wiki-builders.
This is Bungie’s bet on the extraction shooter genre. It is not Destiny. It is not Halo. It is something entirely new from the studio — high-stakes, high-tension, and deliberately punishing. Every run is a risk. Every extraction is earned.
Bungie knows how to make guns feel good. That has never been the question. The question is whether Bungie can make losing your gear feel fair. Five months in, the answer is: mostly yes.
The Extraction Loop
Drop into a zone on Tau Ceti IV. Find loot — weapons, gear, resources, remnants. Complete optional objectives for bonus rewards. Survive encounters with AI enemies and other players. Reach the extraction point. Get out alive with your haul. If you die, you lose what you brought in and what you found. The stakes are real. The tension is constant. And the gunplay — because it is Bungie — is exceptional.
Runner Shells (Classes)
Runners are customisable cybernetic shells with distinct kits. Each Shell has unique abilities, traversal options, and combat roles. The system blends hero-shooter class identity with extraction-shooter loadout freedom. You choose your Shell before each run, and the right Shell for the right map can mean the difference between extraction and death.
Maps & PvE Integration
Multiple maps with distinct biomes, layouts, and AI threat levels. Outpost and Cryo Archive — the later two maps — blend environmental puzzles and an actual raid-style boss encounter into the extraction format, something no other game in the genre has attempted. The PvE elements are not afterthoughts — they are integral to the experience.
Solo, Duo & Trio
Play solo as a Rook (skulking, stealth-focused), in duos, or in trios. The game supports all three playstyles, though team play is where it shines. Solo play is viable but deliberately harder and more tense.
The studio behind Halo and Destiny brings its signature weapon feel to the extraction genre. Every gun has weight, feedback, and precision. The gunplay is the foundation everything else is built on, and it is best-in-class.
Choose from distinct cybernetic Shells with unique abilities, traversal, and combat roles before each run. The system bridges hero-shooter identity with extraction-shooter freedom, creating build diversity that rewards experimentation.
Lose your gear when you die. Keep it when you extract. The risk/reward loop creates genuine tension that casual shooters cannot replicate. Every decision — fight or flee, loot or extract, engage or evade — carries real consequences.
Cryo Archive features a raid boss within the extraction format — a first for the genre. PvE enemies are not just obstacles; they are mechanical challenges that require coordination and strategy alongside the ever-present PvP threat.
