You touch the Artifact. The universe opens. And nothing — not the stars, not the factions, not even time itself — is what you thought it was.
It is the year 2330. Humanity has left Earth behind — the planet is uninhabitable, abandoned to dust and memory — and spread across the Settled Systems, a region of colonised star systems connected by grav drive technology. Two major factions dominate: the United Colonies, a centralised republic headquartered in the gleaming city of New Atlantis, and the Freestar Collective, a loose alliance of frontier settlers who value liberty above all else. Twenty years ago, they fought the Colony War. The peace holds. Barely.
You begin as a miner in Argos Extractors. On a routine dig, you discover an Artifact — a mysterious, impossibly old object that, when touched, floods your mind with visions of the cosmos. The experience draws you into Constellation, the last group of space explorers in the Settled Systems. Their mission: find all the Artifacts. Their question: what do they mean?
The answer takes you across the galaxy. To New Atlantis, where politics and ambition collide. To Akila City, where Freestar Rangers keep the frontier peace. To Neon, a pleasure city built on a fishing platform where the drug Aurora flows freely. To the Crimson Fleet pirates who live outside the law. To forgotten moons, abandoned research stations, and temples hidden on worlds that no one has charted.
The companions are Bethesda’s most fully realised cast since Skyrim. Sarah Morgan, the disciplined Constellation leader. Sam Coe, the Freestar cowboy with a daughter he is trying to raise right. Barrett, the scientist whose optimism masks genuine loss. Andreja, the secretive operative with ties to a faction she does not discuss. Each has a personal questline, a romance arc, and opinions on everything you do.
And then there is the Unity. The Artifacts are not just relics. They are keys. And what they unlock — the nature of the multiverse, the reason for existence, the choice at the end of all things — reframes every decision you have made. Starfield’s story asks the biggest question a game can ask: if you could start over, knowing everything, would you? The New Game+ mechanic is not a gameplay feature. It is the story.
Starfield is the biggest game Bethesda has ever made. That is both its greatest strength and its most persistent criticism. There is more here than any single playthrough can contain — and not all of it is equally compelling.
Exploration — 1,000+ Planets
Over 1,000 planets across 100+ star systems. Each can be landed on, explored, scanned, and catalogued. Some are handcrafted locations with quests, characters, and stories. Most are procedurally generated — barren, resource-rich, but empty. The handcrafted content is excellent: New Atlantis is one of the most impressive cities Bethesda has built, Neon is a cyberpunk fantasy, and the faction questlines rival the best in Skyrim. The procedural content is divisive: some players find peace in surveying desolate moons, others find boredom.
Combat
First-person and third-person shooting with a vast arsenal of ballistic, energy, and exotic weapons. The gunplay is the best Bethesda has ever delivered — punchy, responsive, and varied. Zero-gravity combat in derelict ships and space stations adds a unique dimension. Boost packs provide jetpack-style verticality. The combat is not its competitors’ best, but it is a massive improvement over Fallout 4.
Ship Building & Space Combat
Build, customise, and fly your own starship. The ship builder is a deep, modular system where you snap together components — cockpits, engines, cargo holds, weapons, living quarters — to create functional, flyable vessels. Space combat is dogfight-style with power allocation (weapons, engines, shields, grav drive). It is not a space sim, but it is satisfying.
Character Building & Skills
Skill trees span five categories: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. Skills unlock through spending skill points AND completing challenges (kill X enemies with a weapon type, persuade X NPCs). The system rewards varied play. Persuasion is a standout — a dialogue minigame where you spend persuasion points on increasingly risky arguments.
The Free Lanes Update (2026)
The game-changing free update that addressed the biggest criticism: loading screens between space and planet surfaces. Free Lanes adds manual space flight between locations, Cruise Mode for automated travel, rovers for planetary traversal, and 30+ new unique point-of-interest types. It is the update that transformed Starfield from a disjointed experience into a more cohesive universe.
A deep, modular ship construction system. Snap together cockpits, engines, cargo, weapons, and living spaces. Every component affects flight handling, combat capability, and crew capacity. Ships are functional vehicles that you fly, fight in, and live aboard. The builder alone has consumed hundreds of hours for dedicated players.
New Game+ is not just a replay feature — it is the story’s conclusion. The Unity mechanic reframes the entire game as a multiverse narrative where each playthrough is a different universe. Characters acknowledge you’ve been here before. Dialogue changes. The fourth wall bends without breaking.
A dialogue minigame where you spend persuasion points on arguments of varying risk. Low-risk options build slowly. High-risk options can fail spectacularly. The system rewards reading NPC personality types and choosing arguments that resonate with their values. It is the best dialogue mechanic Bethesda has designed.
Establish bases on any planet surface. Build habitats, resource extractors, research stations, and cargo links between outposts. The system supports supply chains and resource management across the galaxy.
